The crash took place around 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13 in New Haven County on I-91 in Wallingford.

According to the Connecticut State Police, a flat-bed tractor-trailer, driven by Dennis Goncalves Medeiros, age 46, had been traveling on I-91 northbound, prior to Exit 13, when the tractor-trailer began to swerve across all three lanes on the roadway.

The tractor-trailer hit a metal guard rail located adjacent to the left median, which resulted in the rig losing a left rear tire.

The truck then swerved across all three lanes and struck the wire-rope guard rail located on the right shoulder of the roadway.

As a result of the collisions, metal beams being transported on the flat-bed of the tractor-trailer were released onto the roadway, state police said.

Interstate-91 northbound was shut down for more than two hours, causing significant traffic delays, while the metal debris was cleared from the highway.

Medeiros and his juvenile passenger reported no injuries.

Investigating troopers administered field sobriety tests, which Medeiros did not perform to standard.

Medeiros was placed under arrest, transported to Troop I in Bethany, where he was processed without incident.

Medeiros was charged with the following violations:

  • Risk of injury to a child
  • Reckless endangerment
  • DUI
  • Failure to maintain lane

He was released on a $1,500.00 non-surety bond.
